Liminal Archive

The project, Liminal Archive designs a digital repository of incomplete building projects and modernist ruins from Africa and across the globe. Working in collaboration with Limbo Accra, a spatial design practice dedicated to the digital repair and transformation of spatial structures. Working with prerecorded footage, I used tools, Metashape and Cinema 4D, to create visual walkthroughs of sites across North and South Africa. The project aims at preserving the memory of these buildings and exploring their potential for adaptive reuse, contributing to a regenerative future.

the challenge

the INTENT

How do we preserve and reimagine the unbuilt, abandoned, or forgotten structures that still shape the landscapes and memories of postcolonial cities? Across Africa and beyond, countless architectural projects were left incomplete, remnants of utopian visions.

To create a digital archive of incomplete spatial projects as sites of utopian imagination, and adaptive reuse. Elevating these sites as digital, architectural records, this archive explores their potential for regenerative futures.

Research

The research incorporates ideas from decolonial theory, ruin studies, and speculative preservation. Using an extensive archive of footage from modernist structures, I examined the historical and economic circumstances that led to these projects being halted often due to shifting political regimes.

Research

Using Metashape to build photogrammetry models, and Cinema 4D to digitally reconstruct and animate the buildings, I developed spatial sequences that allow viewers to move through and around each structure.

Prototyping

A digital archive documenting architectural limbo spaces. a prototype to show speculative futures.

Outcome

Each scan is a fragment, a suggestion, an invitation to imagine what still could be. Liminal Archive resists the notion that ruins are failures. Instead, unfinished conversations, between ambition and reality, architecture and time.
